Great Lakes water safety program aims to stop drownings

Michigan Sea Grant helped foster the development of the Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium, focusing on water safety for Michigan’s swimmers and others throughout the Great Lakes region.

The consortium, led by Jamie Racklyeft, a volunteer and U-M communications professional, began working with Michigan Sea Grant and water safety partners in 2013 after he nearly drowned in Lake Michigan.

For the past 20 years, Michigan Sea Grant has actively led the charge for increasing awareness about dangerous currents among coastal communities and securing support to deploy thousands of life vests, rescue buoys and other water safety equipment.

Michigan Sea Grant is a cooperative program of the U-M and Michigan State University. It is part of the National Sea Grant College program, a network of 30 university-based programs in coastal states across the country.
