UM-Flint receives grant to help former foster care students

With the help of a Michigan Department of Human Services (MDHS) grant, UM-Flint added a campus Life Skills coach to assist students making the transition to college from the foster care system.

The $450,000 three-year grant from the MDHS will benefit former foster care students participating in the “Mpowering My Success” program. UM-Flint also will provide a team of trained mentors, professional staff and peer advisors to supplement the Life Skills coach.

Genesee County is second in the state to Wayne County in the number of youth in foster care, with approximately 1,200 young people in the system. Of this number, it is estimated roughly 400 are at or near college age.
