UM-Dearborn student founds club to help students from Detroit high schools

Truman Hudson Jr., a Detroit native and student in UM-Dearborn’s doctor of education program, founded the Community Economic Development Club and spent the summer teaching 15 soon-to-be 10th grade students from Detroit to take a critical look at the world and then practically apply that knowledge.

The curriculum stresses cultural relevancy—an idea that benefits both the student and the community. The students will work with local nonprofit organizations and develop public service announcements to raise awareness about college accessibility, food justice and LGBT issues in the African American community.
