U-M leads effort on new water safety campaign

Since 2002, dangerous currents and waves along Lake Michigan have claimed the lives of 57 swimmers in Michigan alone, according to the National Weather Service.

A U-M-led team of communications and outreach experts has developed a suite of water safety messages as part of a new “Be Current Smart” campaign. U-M members from Michigan Sea Grant, the Graham Sustainability Institute and Michigan Creative collaborated with colleagues at Michigan Technological University, Michigan State University, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the National Weather Service. The campaign includes information about the thousands of life jackets and throw rings on beaches this summer.
