Making surgery safer: U-M works with local hospitals

Michiganders who go “under the knife” at any one of 52 hospitals across the state can rest easier, knowing their surgical team is taking part in a U-M-led effort to improve the quality and safety of surgery in the state. Called the Michigan Surgical Quality Consortium, the effort includes Borgess Medical Center, Bronson Health, Holland Hospital, Lakeland Healthcare, Mercy Health Partners, Mercy Health St. Mary’s, Metro Health, Spectrum and the other hospitals on this map:http://www.msqc.org/docs/MSQC_Map_05102012.pdf.

Together the doctors, nurses, data analysts and administrators who take part in MSQC have saved untold lives and dollars by pooling information about surgical care, and sharing best practices. The effort has received a new federal designation as one of the country’s only Patient Safety Organizations.
